QUOTES FROM A FEW OF THE
TRAVEL GUIDES, NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES THAT
HAVE RECOMMENDED THE ADELPHI:
COUNTRY INNS AND BACK ROADS (by Norman T. Simpson,
published by Harper and Row): "It takes a well-developed
sense of personal style and natural talent to take elements
that are both eclectic and eccentric and combine them
to produce a work of art, Sheila and Gregg have done it:
The Adelphi Hotel is just that. The building is a spectacular
example of high Victorian architecture. A facade of Lombardian
brick work is fronted by three-story wooden columns adorned
by elaborate masses of fretwork. The opulent lobby could
now be considered Gilded Age...The antiques throughout
the inn are all originals and attest to the dedication
of the collectors. Prints and engravings of old Saratoga
adorn the walls, and fresh flowers add color...The couples'
full artistic vision is evident in the spacious guest
rooms. Most are done in the Victorian style, but always
with unique touches that make them lively. A few rooms
are worlds unto themselves, such as the Riviera Room with
its wall murals of the French Riviera and the Adirondack
Suite...Each room has a full bath, air-conditioning, television,
and special little touches...Sheila and Gregg have achieved
their goal of creating a small grand-luxe hotel in the
finest European tradition".
FROMMER'S GUIDE TO NEW YORK STATE (by John Foreman,
published by Prentice-Hall): "Erected in 1877, it
has an intricate brown and yellow paint job that oozes
period charm. Inside is a lobby loaded with Victorian
froufrou furniture, a stenciled ceiling, rococco revival
sofas and fringed draperies. A skylit staircase leads
to 34 perfectly wonderful rooms, each different, all decorated
with antique rugs and furniture, pictures on silk cords,
curtains on swags...All have high ceilings and private
bathrooms...An upstairs lounge packed with potted plants
and appealing Victorian clutter leads to a wicker-filled
porch beyond whose blosson-laden flower boxes lies the
panorama of Saratoga's famous Broadway. What a place for
breakfast...I think this hotel is hands down the best
in town. The Adelphi, though not the costliest place in
town, is the most atmospheric and my particular favorite".

NEW YORK TIMES: "The only place that even
remotely approximates the Saratoga charm of yesteryear."
DETAILS MAGAZINE: (Conde Nast Publication): "One
of the true highlights of Saratoga is the Adelphi Hotel,
built in 1877...What Parkert and Siefker have created
is a wonderfully hospitable, and fun, tour de force. The
rooms and suites are done in Victoriana, as well as interpretations
of other themes from around the world, and will satisfy
the most precocious travelers, fantasy lovers and lovers.
The pair's sense of color and design retraces history,
not at all verbatim, but with a total sense of originality."
VICTORIAN HOMES MAGAZINE: (Cover Story) "The
best place to stay in a late 19th Century resort town
is in a grand-luxe Victorian hotel. In Saratoga Springs,
the Adelphi is the last of the elegant hotels that once
lined Broadway, and it certainly qualifies as the most
luxurious accommodation in town...The richness of the
rooms is so personally conceived that each room feels
like the only private guest room in a single family house,
partly because Gregg and Sheila do consider the Adelphi
their home and give it the attention another couple would
give to a much smaller space."
