Saratoga
History |
| |
|
 |
Saratoga Springs
itself has an unparalleled history for a town of its size.
In the 19th Century it boasted the two largest Hotels
in the world - as well as dozens of smaller hotels and
hostelries. The railroad brought visitors who ensconced
themselves in grand style in the palatial hotels, spending
the entire summer taking the waters and enjoying country
village life. The Adelphi is a rare and precious survivor
from that glorious Saratoga epoch which counted many world
class social, artistic and intellectual luminaries as
well as America's wealthiest families among Saratoga's
admirers and summer denizens. The Adelphi is a testament
to the great hotel era in Saratoga. Its rarity bestows
a unique specialness upon it ... it is a beloved Saratoga
landmark. Things actually haven't changed that much in
Saratoga Springs. Of course it still possesses its renowned
mineral springs, sprinkled throughout the village. They
remain very popular, as do the mineral baths at three
opulent bath houses. Saratoga was called "the world's
fountain of youth" in 1890... and it continues to be worthy
of that description. |

Culture |
| |
|
 |
Culturally, Saratoga Springs
is unmatched. Its Performing Arts Center is world renowned,
with a summer season featuring the New York City Ballet
and Philadelphia Orchestra - each with their respective
seasons in July and August. Between performances by these
groups, pop musicians are featured (from Neil Young to
Rosemary Clooney to Elton John) and here is a highly regarded
Jazz Festival in early July as well as a series of chamber
music concerts at a smaller theater featuring world class
musicians. There are several very good museums in town
- including the National Museum of Racing and National
Museum of Dance. There is a mix of 19th and early 20th
Century architecture of great appeal to those cultivating
an interest in our American architectural heritage. Broadway
has in fact been named one of the five best main streets
in the U.S. by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
In addition there is Yaddo, the oldest and most prestigious
artist retreat in America. Saratoga was unanimously voted
the winner of the American Heritage Magazine's first Great
American Place Award in a cover story prominently featuring
the Adelphi (Oct. '97).

Race Track |
| |
|
 |
Of course there is
the Saratoga Race Track. Many think it is the most beautiful
- and certainly the most historic - thoroughbred race
course in America. Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Phipps and the
like turn up yearly for the racing season, which can only
be described as a five-star production. The finest race
horses in the world combined with long tradition and a
pronounced theatricality make Saratoga's track a powerful
magnet for thousands of racing fans during the month of
August. Other Saratoga Attractions: There are an unusually
large number of innovative restaurants, out-of-the-ordinary
boutiques and shops, a gorgeous state park with forests
and streams and even a geyser, an immense quantity of
antique shops and flea markets. Saratoga really is a destination
with something to offer every one of its visitors. To
set it all off, the Adelphi offers a dream-like and entrancing
experience, unique probably from any hotel anywhere. We
have the charm and grandeur of another century - with
a modern twist and an eye towards comfort, visual pleasure
and the traditional Saratoga hospitality. The Adelphi
is the experience of the past that you are looking for
- a stay with us is an experience that takes you back
in time in the best possible sense of the term with all
the singular treasures of Saratoga just outside the door. |
